A body condition score (BCS) is a number assigned to your pet based on evaluation of fat at a few key locations on their body. A BCS can range from 1 to 9 (though some hospitals use a 1 to 5 scale). A BCS of 1 means an animal is severely underweight, probably in danger of death from starvation

The older dog will need a good, well-balanced diet that is lower in calories, higher in fiber and has adequate protein and fat. For some older dogs, you can continue to feed their regular food, but in a smaller quantity. Specially formulated senior diets are lower in calories and help to create a feeling of fullness.

Older dogs can benefit from supplements — Adding vitamins to an aging dog's diet can help their joints, organs, and digestive system stay healthy. Certain dog supplements prevent common problems — Some enzymes and acids can help with inflammation and pain, while vitamins can head off premature aging.

“Growth” foods necessary at the puppy stage have higher protein levels and calorie counts to meet your pup's developmental needs. But once your pup is six to 12 months old those needs change. That's usually when your puppy is nearing his adult height and can transition to adult food.

Both canned and dry foods have to meet basically the same standards for nutrient levels, so both are going to provide adequate nutrients, but for some pets and situations, either canned or dry may be more ideal.

Meat can be raw or cooked for pups, but remember that dogs need more than just meat. ... Pups digest meat more easily when it is minced but by the time they are three months old they should be getting pieces big enough to chew. Some raw meat puts your dog at risk for salmonella, a bacterial contamination.... Raw meat is not recommended for puppies, dogs with liver or kidney failure, or dogs with cancer. Between four to six months of age, the permanent teeth appear and grow rapidly. Introducing fresh raw meaty bones at around 12 weeks of age ensures they are chewing actively around the time the permanent teeth erupt.
